Goodnight Mommy touches a nerve in more ways than one, none more unsettling than the metaphor of cosmetic surgery as a mutating force. Things slowly escalate to a level of emotional and physical violence rarely seen in conventional horror flicks. They continue to watch their mother closely, looking for signs that will affirm their suspicions. You can’t quite put your finger on it, but they seem to have an unnaturally close bond even for twins. Something isn’t right with the boys either. She demands absolute silence and insists that they keep the blinds closed during the day while she recovers.

She’s cold and hostile towards her children, ignoring Lukas altogether. She’s had extensive facial surgery after an accident and her face is completely covered by bandages. Set almost entirely within the confines of an isolated, austere house in the Austrian countryside, nine-year-old twins Elias and Lukas (the Schwarz brothers) begin to suspect that their mother (Wuest) isn’t who she says she is. That wouldn’t only be unfair, it would be criminal. I will NOT reveal any of the cool surprises Goodnight Mommy has in store for regular viewers. It didn’t ruin it for me rather, it made the experience more like a surreal nightmare.

I caught on to a major plot twist early on which is absolutely no reflection on the movie like I said, I know what to look for. It’s a more-than-commendable effort by writer-directors Veronica Franz and Severin Fiala making their first feature-length film. For a change, the movie lives up to the promise made by the trailer. WOW! It’s one of the most unnerving horror flicks I’ve seen in years. It looked creepy as hell I knew I had to see it. I was first turned on to the Austrian horror film Goodnight Mommy by a friend who showed me the trailer on her cell phone over lunch during a recent trip to New York. Watching it a second time proved to be as fun an experience as my first viewing.

I admit it, like everybody else in the world, I did not see that ending coming.

The last one I recall surprising me is 1999’s The Sixth Sense. I also have a basic understanding of how they’re constructed. I can usually spot plot twists fairly early on because I know what clues to look for. The downside to my movie addiction is that I’ve seen so many that it’s almost impossible to get one past me.
